Life-saving Ways to Help a Refugee
Refugees are people who had been forced to leave their comfortable homes in order to escape war, persecution or natural disaster. It is important to know that no human being choses to flee from his home to another land where there is a temporary shelter, limited food supply and poor individual development unless the home is a threat to their own existence. If you are a kind person you may want to give a hand to the suffering human beings. But you may wonder how you can help them? There are acts that may seem simple to you but to a refugee is a life-saving.
To begin with, the best way to help refugees, I believe, is consulting with them. Listening to their stories, providing verbal solutions and just noding your head is way of showing Kindnesses, love and thoughtfulness. This simple act can improve their mental health and give them contentment and a hope to live with. It is very hard for a refugee to trust anyone because one may take advantage of their vulnerability. Therefore by just having a conversation with them you may gain their trust and they may tell you a life-threatening problem which you may have the ability to solve. You may become a platform for them to share their stories. By writing this paragraph, I could not stop tears wetting my eyes because I remembered how it helped me. Indeed having a talk means a lot to a refugee and most people may not know it.
Secondly, you can teach them a skill and provide them knowledge. If you do not have time to teach them skills and knowledge then you can finance it or encourage your University to provide scholarships. For a refugee, losing chance to pursue education is devastating. It is said give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach him to fish and you feed him for a lifetime . Additionally, you can donate books and pens. Since there is no reliable and affordable electricity in the camp, one can donate solar lamps. In 2014 I have received a solar lamp from WindleTrust and it actually helped me pass examinations because I was able to read at night and I am forever thankful. Please note that the purpose of this blog is to raise awareness on the importance of education to refugees so you can also share this blog to raise awareness on the need of education.
Thirdly you can help refugees by employing them. Often the main goal of refugees is self-reliance and resilence. It is not secret that jobs give humans integrity. If you are living in different country you may give them online jobs such as freelancing. Most countries do not allow work permit for refugeees unless it is cirtain or specific professional work. You may also finance their business ideas or even give them business ideas. Some refugees have started farming to increase food production. By donating farm inputs, you lower the cost of production hence you may encourage to continue with farming.
In conclusion, I believe that consulting with refugees, having time with them, educating and employing are the life-saving ways to help ease any refugees life. By doing these actions you may turn hopeless to a hopeful! However, there are many other ways in which you can help the refugees such as praying for them volunteering, donating clothes and utensils and working with UNHCR.
